BVI Road Traffic
Road Traffic in the British Virgin Islands

Traveling throughout the British Virgin Islands is fun and full of beautiful tropical hillsides and stunning beaches.

If you are planning on renting a car and driving yourself, keep in mind a few things while traveling through the BVI Territories:

  • Valid BVI driving licenses are required to drive in The BVI, cost is $10.00 U.S.
  • A temporary BVI driving license can be obtained from the Traffic Licensing Office or Car Rental Agencies with proof of a valid Driver's License from another country.
  • Remember, you must be at least 25 years old to rent a car in the BVI.
  • If you come from a country that drives on the right-hand side of the road, remember to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • There is only one signal light in the BVI and it is located in Road Town.
  • Most of the larger road intersections have "round abouts" which are easy to navigate, but remember that the vehicle in the circle which rotates clockwise has the right of way.
  • Parking along any yellow painted curb is subject to ticketing.
  • Pedestrians have the right away at all times when crossing any road.
  • Speed limits are posted on most roads and cautions for speed bump areas are also posted.
  • Cows, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens can be found grazing or traveling along the roads all around the Islands. Please be aware of their existence and give them way whenever possible.
  • In the BVI, the horn is used mainly to greet or acknowledge friends. Drivers are usually not asking you to move or get out of the way as they normally would do in other countries. However, if you are on a stretch of road, they are most likely using the horn to let you know that they are behind you and intend to pass so as not to take you by surprise.

Common sense and driving within the speed limits will make for a safe and fun exploration of the British Virgin Islands!
